Coffee Wood Chew Size Guide: Choosing Sizes for Heavy Chewers
Updated 12 October 2026
Standard Sizes by Dog Weight
This is the coffee wood chew size guide we work from for standard (Basic) pieces. If you're building a range for your store or listing, it's the table to start from.
| Size | Length | Diameter | Weight per piece | Dog weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| XS | 10 cm | 1.5–2 cm | 23–30 g | Up to 3 kg |
| S | 13–14 cm | 2–2.5 cm | 35–45 g | 3–5 kg |
| M | 17–18 cm | 2.5–3.5 cm | 90–110 g | 5–8 kg |
| L | 19–20 cm | 3.5–4.5 cm | 120–180 g | 8–12 kg |
| XL | 21–22 cm | 4.5–5.5 cm | 230–310 g | 12–20 kg |
| XXL | 22–23 cm | 5.5–7 cm | 340–440 g | From 20 kg |
Sizes are natural and vary slightly piece to piece.
Sizing for Heavy Chewers
The weight bands above assume an average chewer. A dog that chews hard puts more force through less wood, so the practical rule is simple: when in doubt, size up, never down.
- Near the top of a band? Move up one size. A 7 kg dog that chews hard is better served by an L than an M.
- Large breed, strong jaw? Look at XXL first, or the Gorilla format below.
- Never give a small size to a large dog. A piece that fits too far into the mouth is the one that ends up a swallowing risk.
Coffee wood tends to wear down into soft fibers as a dog chews, rather than breaking into sharp splinters. That is a property of the wood, not a guarantee for every dog. A determined chewer can still crack off a larger chunk, which is why sizing is only half the answer.
The Gorilla Format: A Chunkier Option
Alongside the standard range, we produce a larger coffee wood format called Gorilla, in sizes S to XL. Pieces run 8 to 16 cm long and weigh roughly 155 g to 1.1 kg each.
Gorilla pieces are shorter and heavier than standard pieces of a similar size name, so they suit buyers who want a thicker, heavier chew for big dogs. If your customers have big dogs and ask for a heavier piece, this is the range to sample next to XL and XXL.
One note on longer pieces: we don't make coffee wood chews longer than the standard size table, even on request.
What to Tell Your Customers
For a retailer or brand, the size guide matters most on the shelf and the listing page. These are the points worth printing on a tag or adding to a product description:
- Choose the size by your dog's weight, and size up for hard chewers.
- Supervise the first sessions with any new chew.
- Pick up any loose pieces that break off.
- Take the chew away if you see cracks or sharp edges.
- Replace the chew once it's worn down to a size that could be swallowed.
- Rinse with clean water only, then let it dry fully.
One practical detail: size names aren't universal. Some buyers already use their own size system, so before an order we confirm which naming you'd like on your labels.
Building a Size Range Without Overcommitting
The MOQ for coffee wood chews is 50 pieces per item, not per size. One item offered in four sizes qualifies as soon as the four sizes add up to 50 pieces, which makes it easier to test a full size spread before reordering the sizes that sell. Orders with your logo or label use the same MOQ.
To check sizes in hand first: 3 free samples per customer. You cover the shipping cost, which can be credited against your first order. Our sales team confirms the details.
